When Silas Blackburn is found dead in a locked bedroom, his estranged granddaughter is suspected of his murder by the private detective Blackburn hired on the day of his death. According to the old man, he had a healthy heart and he intended to disinherit Lauren the next morning if she didn't show up and convince him to change his mind. The detective has a compelling story about Silas fearing his granddaughter planned to kill him, but the police think Blackburn died a natural death and refuse to investigate. The old man had decided to sleep in a bedroom in the original, unused wing of the house, a bedroom with a long history of bizarre and gory deaths, a bedroom he didn't use for that very reason, the spirits were too active in that room. At first, Lauren is the logical suspect. She hated her grandfather, stood to lose her inheritance and she couldn't remember anything about that night. Lauren is grateful that Kate and Hart Spencer are doing everything possible to help her, especially since their relationships have been strained by a terrible argument a few months earlier, but Kate seems to be hiding something. Lauren hates to think it, but Kate and Hart seem a little too eager to sabotage the search for the truth. At least, that’s how it appears to Lauren. On the day after the murder, Carlos Paredes, a friend who shares Lauren’s dissipated city lifestyle and who was the last person to see Lauren in Boston, shows up at the dilapidated estate uninvited and unwelcome, insisting he came to help Lauren. He knows about unnatural and spectral emanations and claims a sensitivity to the paranormal world.
